The Vilatuxe Wind Band has a long history going back to 1944 when it was founded by twelve young men.
One of its many directors was the composer Enrique García Rey who, as well as directing, composed pieces which became famous such as the Vilatuxe pasodoble, the "Brisas Galacias" works and "Rapsodia Galega no. 1", which many wind bands continue to play.
The band takes part in contests and festivals, both within and outside Galicia, where they have won several prizes, including second place in the Madrid Popular Wind Band Contest in 1985 and third prize in their division in the 12th Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest.
In 2013 the band was selected to take part in the Galician Wind Band Contest, which was held in Santiago in November.
One of the objectives of the Asociación Cultural Nova Banda de Música de Vilatuxe-Lalín, Pontevedra, is the continual development of the band, enabling it to tackle a wide and diverse musical repertoire which attempts to bring together traditional and contemporary music written for wind band by Spanish and foreign composers.
Its repertoire also includes Galician works which include a bagpipe accompaniment, something which has increased the band's popularity both within and outside Galicia.
The band has performed on several television programs (their last performance was on 2/1/13). In 1998 the association founded its music school where, during the academic year, pupils are trained to become future members of the band.
The band and school are housed in the Vilatuxe Auditorium. It is here where the band rehearses, classes are taught and regular concerts are given by the band, the youth band and the children's band. It also houses the Vilatuxe Wind Band Festival.
