HISTORY OF THE BAND

The first record of the Algueña Band dates to the end of the nineteenth century when it performed in the 1899 Easter Week processions. However, the Band disappeared in 1911.

At a later date, a priest, José García Pérez arrived in Algueña and dedicated himself to training musicians and reforming the Band, which he led himself until 1930 when he passed the baton to Manuel Sellés Sala. The Band broke up with the arrival of the Civil War, starting up once again when the conflict was over. This marks the beginning of a period in which the Band passed through two phases of decline and change.

From 1969 the Band returned to continued activity which culminated in the 1970s in many of the group's triumphs.

On 26 January 1981 the music association was founded with the name Algueña Music Association.

In 1999 the Band celebrated its first centenary.

In the last decade the Band has participated in numerous contests and festivals, including:

  • The Alicante Provincial Wind Band Contest where they participated in Division Three and won Second Prize in 2001 and 2004, and First Prize and Honorable Mention in 2005 and 2010.
  • The Valencia Region Wind Band Contest where they took part in Division Three and won Second Prize in 2005, and First Prize and Honorable Mention in 2010.

Currently the Music Association has a Band, made up of 55 musicians, and a music school, all under the direction of José Antonio Antolín Polo.
