BIOGRAPHY
He is a teacher, composer and conductor. Although he regularly writes for different orchestral ensembles and composes music for visual media, his main compositional focus is symphonic wind band music. He combines composition with teaching and conducting, and is the principal conductor of the Unió Musical d’Albaida l’Aranya (Spain).
His wind band music has been recorded on numerous CDs by major ensembles, mainly from the Netherlands, France, Spain and Portugal. Most of these recordings have been distributed by the Dutch publisher Molenaar Edition, for which he has worked, publishing many of his works and with which he released his first monographic album, entitled Flash, the wind music of Carlos Pellicer. His works have been performed by major ensembles at international festivals and competitions, including the National Conservatory of Lisbon, the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea, the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, the Federazione dei Corpi Bandistici di Trento, the CIBM Ciutat de València and Musikfest Baden-Württemberg, among others.
He has received numerous national and international composition awards. Among the most notable are the second prize and Honourable Mention at the 27th edition of the prestigious International Competition for Original Wind Band Composition in Corciano (Italy) in 2009; first prize at the same competition at its 29th edition in 2013; and the Euterpe Music Award, presented by the FSMCV in 2014.
He is frequently invited to act as a musical adviser for recordings, to give lectures and talks on instrumentation, and to serve as a jury member at various national and international competitions. Notable engagements include serving as a member of the jury of the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música Ciutat de València in 2018, the International Composition Competition in Corciano (Italy), and the International Composition Competition in Jeju (South Korea), across their various editions.
He regularly works in different countries with both professional and amateur wind bands. His work in the field of composition for brass and percussion instruments has led to commissions and performances of his works in more than twenty countries around the world, including at competitions and events such as the World Music Contest in Kerkrade and the 25th Federal Music Congress in Switzerland in 2026. He has collaborated with renowned international ensembles and musicians, including the Seoul Wind Orchestra, SBO Kreuzlingen, Belgian Brass, Steven Mead, Pacho Flores, Spanish Brass, Ximo Vicedo, Ricardo Carvalhoso, Raúl Junquera, David Rejano, Toni Scholl, Georg Pranger and Josep Burguera.
Among his extensive repertoire for wind orchestra, particular emphasis should be placed on his two symphonies for large-scale orchestral forces, commissioned by the Certamen Internacional de Música de Altea and the Symphonisches Blasorchester Kreuzlingen (Switzerland).
His main activities currently focus on teaching, composition and conducting.
COMPULSORY PIECE: «Sinfonietta of Light»
Sinfonietta of Light is an adaptation of the second symphony for wind orchestra composed by Carlos Pellicer in 2025, Symphonia Luminosa. This initiative was launched by the CIBM Organising Committee for the 2027 edition of the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música “Ciutat de València”, for which it has been selected as the compulsory piece for Division One. It is a more concise adaptation in terms of duration and instrumentation, while retaining the same meticulous craftsmanship, tremendous expressiveness and power. The main difference from the original version lies in the number of movements, which has been reduced from four to three, transforming the work into a “small symphony” of shorter duration (approximately 21–22 minutes).
Although it is neither programme music nor descriptive music, it is, quite simply, music. Nevertheless, the concept of light, in its many manifestations, also serves as the guiding principle of this work. The speed of light, its capacity for infinite reflection, its duality with shadow (or our shadows), and, above all, its unceasing LUMINOUS quality are the fundamental ideas upon which the entire musical work is built. Like music, light has the ability to convey the condition of constant change and, above all, fleetingness, as well as the most profound beauty and the heroic and majestic power of light overshadow, over darkness.
The Main Thematic Material
2025 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of the Soviet composer, conductor and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. His contribution as a composer was so immense and influential that it also extended to wind orchestras, which have continued to perform some of his most important works, including the famous Festival Overture, Op. 96.
In Symphonia Luminosa, and consequently in this Sinfonietta of Light, homage is paid to this great composer and, perhaps, to one of his most frequently performed compositions. Discovering the elements that connect this work with the Festival Overture, which also serve as thematic elements, is undoubtedly the most intriguing challenge, leading the musicians to discover moments of intense musical excitement, passages of the utmost expressiveness and, of course, others of immense orchestral grandeur.
Sinfonietta in Three Movements
I. REFRACTION AND DANCE
(Lights of our time)
The first and second movements of Symphonia Luminosa (Prism and Dance of Lights) have been combined to create this single movement, bringing together the two initial thematic ideas: the astonishing reflective property of light and its unpredictable and fleeting nature.
II. GLOOM
(Knowing our shadow)
Recognising our shadows is difficult. Finding our light is essential. This movement ventures into that uncertain, and sometimes intimate, territory where music does not describe but reveals.
III. CLARITY
(Eternal light)
Having journeyed through shadows and reflections, Clarity bursts forth as a firm and powerful proclamation of the power of light over everything else. The timbral and luminous energy rises towards a striking, exhilarating and majestic finale.
