HISTORY OF THE BAND

The Band's official debut took place in August 2005 on the main day of Caldas' August Festivities.

Currently the Band is made up of more than sixty young musicians; the vast majority are students of the Municipal Music School and the Conservatory.

It was in the Music School, which has been open for over fifteen years, where numerous musicians began their training who would go on to have the idea of creating their own band. The formation of the Caldas Wind Band was the work of Milagros Valiño Ferreiro - Mila - who has been Principal Conductor of the group since its foundation.

In 2006 the MARIÑOLEIRA Cultural Association was created to facilitate the Band's activities. Its members are the parents of musicians, musicians and others who, while they are not members of the band, help to maintain it.

This Association's main objective is to promote the Caldas de Reis Wind Band and organize local musical activities and musical activities in general.

In mid-2007, Daniel Portas González became Director of the Band. In the same year and under his baton, the Band took part in the Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest for the first time, winning Second Prize in Division Three. In July 2008 they took part in the International Wind Band Contest "City of Valencia" where they received a Special Mention.

In 2009 the Band won Second Prize in the Valga Wind Band Contest.

In August of the same year they took part in the Aranda de Duero Wind Band Festival, receiving a Special Mention. In October 2009 they took part in the Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest.

In November of the same year they took part in the III Galician Wind Band Contest in Santiago de Compostela. In 2010 they participated in the Santiago de Compostela Regional Contest, winning Second Prize in the Special Section.


BIOGRAPHY OF THE CONDUCTOR

Daniel Portas González

Daniel Portas González began studying music at the age of ten in the Music School of the Meaño Music Association Band.

In 1995 he joined the Pontevedra Municipal Band as a trombone soloist.

He has founded various brass quintets such as the Santa Eulalia "Quinteto de Metais" and the Galicia Tuba Quintet.

He has been taught by teachers such as: Jesús Juan de Oriola, Juan Carlos Igea, Indalecio Bonet, Joaquín Viñedo Davó, Feliciano Morales Monteagudo, Ricardo Casero, Michel Bequet, Ruben Prades, Petur Eiriksson, Alberto Urretxo, Unai Urretxo, Francisco Rosado, Christian Limberg, Jay Friedman, Rex Martin and Scott Hartmann.

He is currently a teacher of Trombone at the Lalín Professional Conservatory of Music and the trombone soloist in the Santiago de Compostela Municipal Band.

He has attended various short courses in conducting with maestros such as Jan Cober and Marcel Van Bree.

He was the Conductor of the Barro Youth Band, with which he won the following prizes: Second Prize in Division Three of the Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest (2002); Second Prize in Division Two of the Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest (2003); Second Prize in Division One of the Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest (2004); Second Prize in the International Wind Band Contest "City of Valencia" in 2004 and Third Prize in the Aranda del Duero International Contest in Burgos.

In 2007 he became the Director of the Caldas Wind Band, winning Second Prize in the Pontevedra Provincial Wind Band Contest in Division Three. In 2008 they received Special Mention in the CIBM "City of Valencia". The following year they won Second Prize in the Valga Contest and in August they received a Special Mention in the Aranda de Duero International Band Contest in Burgos. In 2010 they won Second Prize in the Special Section of the Santiago de Compostela Regional Contest.
