Sociedad Musical La Familiar De Benisanó

The Banda de la Societat Musical "La Familiar" de Benissanó was founded on 17 March 1861, which means it can be regarded as one of the oldest bands in the Valencia Region. A great number of musicians have trained in its music school and now form part of the most prestigious orchestras and wind bands, as well as teaching in national and international conservatories and in centers of general education. After having different names and a division, the Band was reorganized and founded with its current name on 1 November 1942.

According to surviving records, the Band has received numerous prizes since 1933 in various contests, including: First Prize in the Campo de Criptana National Contest in 1974; two First Prizes in the International Wind Band Contest “City of Valencia” in 1997 and 1999; two First Prizes in the World Music Contest Kerkrade (Holland) in the Concert and Parade Divisions in 2005, three First Prizes in the Certamen Provincial de la Diputación de València in 2004, 2011 and 2022; First Prize in the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música Villa de Aranda (Burgos) in 2012; First Prize at the Certamen Nacional de Música de Cine de Cullera in 2014; Second Prize at the Certamen de Bandas de Música de Catarroja in 2015 and First Prize in 2022; and Second Prize at the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música de València in 2017.

The Association has a youth band currently formed of 85 musicians. The Association’s President is Ángel Alonso Estrems and its Artistic Director is Francisco Javier Castellano Gómez.

Francisco Javier Castellano Gomez was born in Benisanó. He began his studies in sol-fa, euphonium and slide trombone at the Unió Musical de Llíria. He qualified as an advanced teacher of euphonium and trombone with the highest possible grades and received the end of course prize in euphonium by the unanimous decision of the tribunal. He has attended various courses in euphonium and trombone with renowned musicians. Since October 1996 he has been the head euphonium teacher of the Banda Municipal de València. He has collaborated with prestigious orchestras and wind bands for many years, as well as with chamber groups. His interest in conducting has led him to complete various courses in band and orchestra conducting. He directed the Cor Social de la Unió Musical de Llíria and the S. M. “La Popular” de Pedralba. He directed the Corporació Musical de La Pobla de Vallbona, with which he won Second Prize in Division Two of the Certamen Internacional de València in 2013. In 2010 he became director of the S. M. “La Familiar” de Benissanó, with which he has won to date: First Prize in Division Two of the Provincial de València in 2011; First Prize at the Internacional de Aranda de Duero in 2012; First Prize at the Certamen Nacional de Música de Cine de Cullera in 2014; Second Prize at the Certamen de Bandas de Música de Catarroja in 2015 and First Prize in 2022; Second Prize at the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música de València in 2017; and First Prize in Division Two of the Provincial sde València in 2022.
